2016 Caring Heart Run 5k and 1-mile walk
The Plaza at The Palms of Largo
March 5, 2016
Under a perfect blue skyline and warming sunrise from the east of Tampa Bay, the 2016 Caring Heart Run 5k and 1 mile walk proceeded with more runners, walkers and observers than the previous year’s gathering at The Plaza at The Palms of Largo. Those who competed in 2015 couldn’t help reminiscing over the beautiful weather versus last year’s 8:01am down-pouring at the start.
This year’s event and charity fundraiser brought new interest including a first ever “presenting sponsor” by TB Roofing Contractors as well as a new and scenic race course through Eagle Lake Park.
Our original finish down the Avenue of the Palms saw once again a lineup of cheering Palms’ residents, race volunteers and earlier finishers making this event a huge success in 2016!
Winning the race with a fast time of 18:35 was local, Curtis Woodard. He led the race from start to finish with a strong, workman-like pace distancing himself by almost 20 seconds from the pack just as he entered the Eagle Lake Park entrance at Rosery Street.
Finishing in a heated sprint for first place in the Women’s Division was our very own, Melodie Vorhees (HR), with a time of 21:57. And, Youth Division winner Jake Miles outlasted competitor, Bryce Smith to take the trophy with a winning time of 25:30.
Enough can’t be said for our volunteer committee, our many set up and on-course volunteers including the Largo Police, Walgreens managers, the Goodman Group communities and support from City of Largo, Mayor Woody Brown and Commissioner, Samantha Fenger (CSN Board Member) for their continued help in bringing awareness to Caregivers Support Network™ and CSN’s mission of giving back to our Youth Caregivers through its annual scholarship program. Over the last three years CSN has awarded 28 individual scholarships to graduating seniors in Pinellas County. This could not be accomplished without the full commitment of the community of Largo.
Finally, as an unexpected surprise, our 2015 Scholarship recipient, Elena Ruiz-Olden flew home to join us again and perform another flawless rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Elena is currently attending college in the New Orleans area and we are so grateful that she was able to be a part of this growing tradition at The Palms of Largo benefitting Caregivers Support Network.
The event raised more than $4000 towards Caregiving Youth Scholarships. We look forward to continuing this popular event and look for more updates to our 2017 race at www.CaringHeartRun.com
Yours in gratitude,
Bob Delle Donne
